The New Zealand School of Education (NZSE) proved to be the perfect stepping stone for up and coming urban artist Vince Diamond.

vincentDetermined to pursue his passion for performing arts and music production, Vincent needed a foundation programme to prepare him for further tertiary studies. NZSE’s Certificate in Foundation Studies (Level 3) was just what he needed to build his confidence and equip him with the skills and knowledge for success.

NZSE helped me be myself and not be afraid to take risks or chances - to grasp opportunities,” says Vincent, pictured here.

His first steps into tertiary study at NZSE ignited something deep within him, and he got in touch recently to ask if he could perform and speak to a new cohort of students at NZSE Manukau Campus, to welcome them during orientation on day one of their journey. He describes his time studying as much more interactive and practical than he imagined for an academic programme, likening the teacher to a farmer, and himself the student as a seed: "the farmer helping to nurture your growth and help open yourself up to that beauty inside you, to something you may have never seen before".

Now Vincent is studying towards his Bachelor of Communication Studies at Auckland University of Technology and is on his way to a bright creative career.

Vincent was born in Manurewa to a Tangata Whenua family with multi-ethnic heritage ranging from Egyptian, Greek, Japanese and Samoan. He draws inspiration from his family and from some of New York’s early pioneers such as Immortal Technique, and his captivating storytelling style reflects his journey as a true urban poet.

With his love for music and his commitment to push his creative talent by educating himself, Vincent is planning to graduate from AUT and continue producing music and speak his truth in his own unique style, staying true to his Māori heritage and his upbringing in South Auckland.

Like Vincent, Auckland is awash with young leaders, influencers, innovators and entrepreneurs, who may just be looking for that big break, and many of them are beginning to take active steps to change their circumstances for the better. With opportunities such as NZSE’s Certificate in Foundation Studies (Level 3), in addition to higher qualifications ranging from Creative Technologies, Business, Early Childhood Education, Healthcare and more, it is now easier than ever to get foundational academic skills to enter university or step in to a rewarding career.
